DESIGN BRIEF
Tasked with reimagining a forgotten Victorian railway viaduct in the heart of Hammersmith Town Centre, ARTES London was inspired by the world-renowned New York Highline. Our client’s vision: to create a vibrant, sustainable destination for residents, professionals, and visitors, blending luxe home design with eco-friendly renovation. The brief called for a British residential architect to revive a 200m stretch of disused rail, transforming it into a green, multifunctional urban oasis that celebrates community, wellness, and environmental stewardship.

MASTERPLANNING
Our masterplan for this transformative project in Hammersmith introduces a linear public realm defined by four unique activity platforms. The Social Platform, adjacent to Lyric Square and Theatre, is designed for community events and everyday gatherings. The Performance & Entertainment Platform provides an open-air venue for theatre, cinema, and live music. The Wellbeing & Activity Platform encourages outdoor play and fitness, while the Viewing Platform offers sweeping sunset views of London, connecting the city’s past and future.
Each platform is carefully integrated to enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and the daily experience of all users—hallmarks of ARTES London’s approach to sustainable architecture and urban regeneration.

ARCHITECTURE
Drawing on both heritage and innovation, the architectural vision for this eco-friendly renovation champions adaptive reuse and contemporary design. The viaduct’s historic brick arches are preserved and celebrated, while sleek new interventions—such as green roofs, biophilic elements, and robust structural enhancements—enable the creation of energy-efficient homes and public spaces. Noise and air pollution are mitigated through living walls up to 4m tall and a line of mature trees, acting as natural filters and fostering biodiversity.
Localised waterfalls not only mask train noise but also serve as cooling features during London’s summer heat. Every architectural detail is conceived to balance form, function, and sustainability, positioning ARTES London as a leader in luxe home design and sustainable architecture.

SUSTAINABILITY + ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
Sustainability is woven into every layer of this project. From the use of eco-friendly materials and green roof systems to the integration of advanced energy-efficient technologies, every decision aims to measurably reduce environmental impact. The living walls and tree-lined pathways enhance air quality and promote biodiversity along the viaduct. Waterfalls add acoustic comfort and microclimate cooling, supporting wellness for all visitors. The project aspires to achieve a benchmark for sustainable architecture in Hammersmith.
